    Expertise in Heart Surgeries

As a cardiac surgeon in Delhi (India), Dr. Sujay Shad safely performs various heart surgeries for his patients by utilising his surgical skills and methods acquired during his education, training, and decades of practice. His extended retinue of Cardiac Surgery includes:

    Coronary Bypass Surgery:
Almost 70% of his work involves coronary bypass surgery. Nowadays, it is almost entirely Off-Pump CABG. It is his standard practice to provide double or triple/ quadruple arterial grafts to young patients under the age of 60 who have critical coronary lesions. LIMA is universally used for all patients, young patients also receive a radial or RIMA graft in addition. With proper monitoring and pre as well as intraoperative care, we have achieved a less than 3% IABP usage rate, less than 1 unit transfusion for CABG, and less than 0.5% risk of wound infection.

    Surgery for HOCM:
He is one of the few surgeons globally that regularly operate upon patients with Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy. It is a complex cardiac condition that requires an in-depth understanding of the pathophysiology such that an anatomical resection cures a potentially life-threatening condition.

    Heart Transplantation:
Dr. Sujay Shad was the first surgeon in the Non-Govt. hospitals in North India to have successfully carried out a Heart Transplant operation. Primarily there was a lack of organ availability in Delhi until recently; with improving, organ availability the heart transplant program would shortly increase its numbers as well.

    Valve Surgery:
A substantial part of his work involves valve surgery. Single (mitral and aortic) valves are considered for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery. Midsternotomy is the preferred mode for double, triple, or redo valve surgery. He is proficient in Mitral Valve Repairs and has performed a series of mitral valve repairs, with excellent short, medium, and long-term results.

    Aortic Surgery:
Dr. Shad, Cardiologist in Delhi, routinely operates upon patients with Aneurysms of the ascending aorta, aortic arch, and descending thoracic aorta as well as patients with aortic dissection.

    Ventricular Assist Device Implant:
Dr. Shad used a Levitronics LVAD for temporary support of very complex redo surgery for a patient who would not have survived without support. This device was successfully explanted and he remains well and fully functional one week later.

Journey with Sir Ganga Ram Hospital

Dr. Sujay Shad joined Sir Ganga Ram Hospital as Senior Consultant Cardiac Surgeon in Delhi in Feb 2006. He shortly embarked upon performing complex operations like bypasses for poor heart function patients, left ventricular aneurysm repair, mitral valve repair, and surgery for aortic dissection. A serving Naval officer approached him in 2011 for HOCM. This condition requires a very difficult surgery and he offered to refer the officer to the UK or the US where these surgeries are done routinely and Dr. Shad knew the specialists. This officer asked Dr. Shad to help him because he was unable to afford private surgery abroad.

So, Dr. Shad discussed this with his friend (and a former colleague) Dr. Chandrashekhar in the UK. He was to come over to India for a family visit. After a discussion Dr. Chandrashekhar agreed to do this one case. Between the program finalising and the day of his arrival, Dr. Sujay Shad was approached by two more patients for HOCM surgery, and Dr. Chandra asked him to learn about this surgery. So, a procedure he had deliberately avoided became his specialty.

He has helped over 50 patients with this condition by now, all because he was open to help one serving naval officer.

Dr. Shad started heart transplant program, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, and surgery for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension as well. He was the first one to start the use of multiple arterial grafts in my hospital and optimized protocols for the post-operative care of patients. An essential component of post-op care is pain control and he keeps a close check on patient’s pain medication and pain control.

He has developed a very good training program for young surgeons at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and many of the alumni are doing very well as consultant cardiac surgeons. He treats not only his patients kindly; he treats his junior doctors and nurses kindly too. When you visit, the first thing you might notice is a calm competent composure in the working environment.

What to expect during a consultation with Dr. Sujay Shad

    The fine art of listening!
This entails understanding why a person seeks medical attention. That forms the basis of a provisional diagnosis and relevant investigations. Provided the investigations, and patient’s symptoms match, if that can be reliably improved by a surgical procedure; Dr. Shad would advise surgery.

Along with the advice of surgery, he thoroughly explains what benefits might accrue from heart surgery and why he prefers surgery for you and not medical/ non-surgical treatments. Since each surgical procedure carries a defined and finite risk, he gives you a numbered risk. For example, a risk of death and major complications of 0.6% for routine bypass surgery is usual.

Sometimes, surgery would be conducted emergently for conditions that shouldn’t wait for even a few hours like for aortic dissection or aortic valve disruption by infection. Sometimes a very sick patient is first admitted for around a week to improve the patient’s condition before surgery.

All this would be informed in clear Hindi, English, or Punjabi to the family and patient sitting together. He doesn’t believe in ‘please don’t tell the patient that he/she is to undergo surgery’.
